Education
BS, Chemical Biology at University of California, Berkeley 2004 PhD, Chemistry at Stanford University 2011
Experience
My PhD at Stanford focused on organic synthesis of biologically active compounds. I took four graduate-level classes in organic chemistry, was a TA for introductory organic chemistry for three quarters, and a head TA for introductory organic chemistry for three quarters. In addition, while I was at Stanford I individually tutored about a dozen students, ranging from high school chemistry to college level courses in general and organic chemistry. I enjoyed working with students to help them understand previously tricky problems. From my experience, the best way to do this is to focus on fundamental concepts and problem-solving strategies. Memorization has its place, but overreliance can lead to dead-ends on advanced problems.

Hobbies
I recently moved to Portland from the SF Bay Area and have tremendously enjoyed exploring the Pacific Northwest. Portland has an excellent food scene, and the national parks and forests have some of the most beautiful hiking imaginable. I also aspire to do more domestic and international travel. Board games, books (history and fiction), movies and exercise also take up a lot of my free time.
